You see an operation symbol, ±, in the formula. The symbol is shorthand for saying that the equation can be broken into two separate equations, one using the plus sign and the other using the minus sign.
You can apply this formula to any quadratic equation to find the solutions — whether it factors or not. Let me show you some examples of how the formula works.
Use the quadratic formula to solve 2x2 + 7x – 4 = 0.
Refer to the standard form of a quadratic equation where the coefficient of x2 is a, the coefficient of x is b, and the constant is c. In this case, a = 2, b = 7, and c = –4. Inserting those numbers into the formula, you get
